Day 1- Introducing Easter Island
Patagonia may already be one of the most inspiring travel destinations in the world, what to say of my next destination? A mysterious and isolated island discovered on Easter Monday, located 3800 km off the Chilean coast and 2560 km from the nearest island. It is one of the most loneliest places on earth. Also one of the most mystical places and one of the most evocative destinations. I'm talking about the Polynesian island of Rapa Nui, better known as Easter Island.
The first inhabitants called their island Te Pito o Te Hena - Navel of the World. The tiny volcanic island with a surface of only 164 km2, almost seems lost in the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean. It has a maximum length of 24 km and a width of 12 km. It's a pretty bare and barren island mostly covered with lava. It is not the barren, windy and rocky island which is the attraction. What is the attraction is one of the most fascinating archaeological riddles of all times: the Moai statues. How did the creators of these statues find the island? Where did they come from? How did they transport these statues? And above all, why did they do so? I hope (against better judgment) to get not really answers the following days but at least gain a better understanding of this culture. And perhaps a little bit unravel the mystery of Easter Island…
