Day 11-Dead Horse Point NP
We drive through the equally beautiful as inviting Rocky
Mountains for our first stop at the breathtaking ski resort of Vail. The
buildings resemble a Swiss ski resort. The ski lifts are in front of us, ready
for the next ski season. This has to be a picture in winter, but not for my wallet
J.
Grand Junction is located in Colorado's vineyard area. It
is California that is famous for its wines, but for some years now, wine is
being cultivated here in Colorado too. Grand Junction is located next to the
Colorado River.
The Dead Horse Point NP is located near Moab and has
existed since 1959. The place is worth a visit for the beautiful view of the
Colorado Valley. The green river twists and turns in between the canyons.
The
name is associated with a legend. According to the legend, some cowboys drove
wild horses who lived here, through the narrow access to the plateau. The
narrow passage of about 27 meters wide was blocked with a barrier of branches,
resulting in a natural corral, bounded by deep ravines. The cowboys chose the
horses they wanted, sold them on the horse market and left the other horses in
their corral. After the sale, the released the horses. But the last time the
cowboys did not return to release them. Perhaps they got drunk, they were jailed
or shot by the Indians. In any case, the horses died from thirst next to the
Colorado River which is 700 meters lower. We will not die from thirst. It's
very hot, but it starts to pour with rain. For the film freaks, one more note:
it's here that at the end of the movie 'Thelma and Louise' the ladies drove their
cabriolet into the ravine. We will not do that. We only enjoy the beautiful
views.
