Day 9 - Rocky Mountain NP
Some of the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains fall
within the area of the Rocky Mountain National Park. There are more than 100
peaks that reach up to 3,000 meters in height. With 4,346 m, Longs Peak is the
highest mountain in this 1,072 km2 large park. From the Estes Park ski resort,
we follow the Trail Ridge Road, which is called, with 12 amazing views, the
most beautiful road in North America. On our way, we enjoy beautiful panoramas
over mountain peaks and valleys. Mountainous streams accompany us on the way.
We see alpine meadows, pine forests, lakes and rivers.
A coyote pops up on the
road. In the highest part of the park we find the treeless, windy tundra. The
park is very popular with hikers, with more than 500 kilometers of trails. We
make a small walk to a romantic waterfall.
Here too it is clear that dead trees
are not cleaned up but remain where they have fallen.
It creates a different
look. Occasionally, you'll see a glimpse of a glacier, even after a long hot
summer. Fortunately. We leave the park in the southern direction.
Winter park is a cozy ski resort that is built in
Scandinavian style: in colorful and lush wood. It's raining and a hot chocolate
with cream and marshmallows is welcome. Here is also a Belgian waffle house
located, in town but also on the slopes. A little bit of Belgium in Colorado.
Mmmmm.
